Friday the 13th

I have to admit it.  When it comes to Friday the 13th, I am a little superstitious.  It might be because bad things always happen to me on those days!

You might remember my post about surviving Hurricane Charley on August 13, 2004.  That might possibly be the worst Friday the 13th ever, but not the only incident.

There have been numerous Friday the 13ths that have been horrible days and have been "anything-that-could-wrong-did" days at work.  Those are the ones I probably hate the more than being stuck in a high-rise condo with a category 3 hurricane right outside my patio doors.  They appear in my life more frequently.

Last Friday was January 13, 2012.  I didn't realize it until it was actually Friday and I was headed to work calculating when my paycheck would arrive.  At work, things were smooth and there were no real problems.  It was easy for me to forget what day it was and I let down my guard.

After work, I had to make a quick grocery run to get milk and juice for Roxy.   After leaving the store, I tried to take a shortcut to avoid the payday traffic that was clogging up the intersection.  My shortcut was a more gravel-than-pavement cut-through behind some buildings.  I had used it several times before and was used the potholes scattered across the short distance.  I was traveling slow because of the snow and ice we had just had the night before.  I lined my car up to straddle a major pothole looming ahead of me.

My car was stuck and I could not go anywhere.  In trying to dodge the major pothole, I didn't see the small one to the right hand side - just big enough to sink my passenger side tire into.  Drive or reverse - neither worked.  I didn't have a lot of choice on who could help me.  My little brother, as always, came to my rescue.

After about an hour in the dark and cold, he was able to get his rope tied to the axle of my car to pull me out.  After another 10 minutes of me giving the car gas in reverse and him pulling, my car was free and I almost hit the front of his truck.

Thankfully, it appears that the only damage to my car is its desperate need for a bath.  Now I know why Russ decided to get the AAA membership after all.

And I only have two more Friday the 13ths to look forward to this year.

I am well aware of the fact that my concentration on the bad luck the 13th brings probably brings it on me myself.  I know its really just another day.  But seriously, why does it always seem to catch up with me?
